Epidemiological characteristics of varicella outbreaks in Fengxian District of Shanghai, 2010-2015

  • ObjectiveTo analyze the epidemiological characteristics of varicella outbreaks in Fengxian District of Shanghai, 2010-2015, and to provide a scientific basis for developing the control measures and immunization strategy against varicella.
    MethodsData on varicella outbreaks in Fengxian District from 2010-2015 were collected and analyzed by descriptive epidemiological methods.
    ResultsA total of 47 varicella outbreaks were reported in Fengxian District, and all 667 cases were confirmed by clinical diagnosis, of which there were 4 varicella public health emergencies.The annual average attack rate was 0.88 percent.The morbidity peak seasons were from October to November and April to May.Most cases occurred in the 6-10 and 16-20 year-old group, and mainly were primary school and high school students.The male-to-female ratio was 1.31:1.Cases with immunization of varicella vaccine(VarV) accounted for 40.18 percent (268 cases).
    ConclusionThere is an obvious seasonal peak of varicella outbreak in Fengxian District, schools are high-risk collective institutions and students without or unknown VarV were the high-risk population.To strengthen monitoring and rapid response to varicella outbreaks proves to be the effective measures to control the incidence of varicella.
