Epidemiological characteristics on injuries among students of primary and middle schools between 2010 and 2016 in Jinshan District, Shanghai

  • ObjectiveTo ascertain the prevalence and epidemiological characteristics of injury among students of primary and middle schools, and provide scientific basis for targeted prevention and intervention.
    MethodsData from "Injury cards" collected between 2010 and 2016 school year was analyzed to acquire the epidemiological characteristics, clinical features of injuries.
    ResultsA total of 1387 cases of injury were reported and the incidence rate was 0.386%;injury incidence rate of primary school, junior and senior high school was 0.410%, 0.437% and 0.169% respectively with significant difference(χ2 = 70.186, P < 0.01);incidence rate of injury in boys and girls was 0.522% and 0.231% respectively (χ2=196.987, P < 0.01);its main causes were falls (69.36%), collisions(9.22%), traffic accidents(9.15%)and scald(4.04%); main activities in which injury happened including recreation (40.45%), sports activity(33.02%)and daily living (13.91%); significant difference in features of injury existed between genders and school types.
    ConclusionThe characteristics of injury among students show differences between genders and school types; it is necessary to implement interventions in this regard.
