Blood glucose screening results in women in suburban rural areas of Ningbo City

  • ObjectiveTo investigate the distribution characteristics of different blood glucose status of female residents in suburban rural areas of Ningbo city, and to provide scientific evidences for the prevention and control of diabetes in the community.
MethodsIn a town of Ningbo, a total of 1 298 adult women undiagnosed with diabetes were screened for pre-diabetes or diabetes by testing fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and OGTT 2-hour plasma glucose (2hPG).The detection rate of pre-diabetes and diabetes mellitus in the population was statistically analyzed, and the differences in weight, waist circumference and blood pressure were compared between women with different glucose metabolism states.
ResultsAmong the 1 276 women receiving effective screening, the detection rate of pre-diabetes was 17.48% (the age-adjustment detection rate was 13.57%), and that of diabetes was 4.23% (the age-adjusted detection rate was 2.25%).The detection rate of pre-diabetes and diabetes increased with age, and no cases of diabetes were detected under the age of 40.The diagnosis of pre-diabetes and diabetes was mainly determined by 2hPG reaching the diagnostic criteria.Differences in weight, waist circumference and blood pressure found between normal and abnormal blood glucose groups were statistically significant.
ConclusionThe role of 2hPG testing in pre-diabetes and diabetic screening should be emphasized.Blood glucose screening should be recommended for people with abnormal body weight, waist circumference and blood pressure, as well as people over 40 years old.
