Willingness to vaccinate against pneumonia and its related factors in the elderly in a town in Qingpu District of Shanghai

  • ObjectiveTo investigate the vaccination intentions of pneumonia vaccine among the elderly in Baihe Town of Qingpu District, and analyze the factors affecting their vaccination willingness, providing methods to increase the vaccination rate in the elderly.
    MethodsA random cluster sampling was conducted in the village and 800 questionnaires were done and collected from the elderly over 60 years old.The factors affecting the vaccination of pneumonia were analyzed by chi-square test and logistic regression analysis.
    ResultsAmong 800 respondents including those satisfied with their own health status and those unsatisfied with their health status, 566 (70.75%) were willing to vaccinate pneumonia and 360 (45.00%) knowledgeable about pneumonia and pneumonia vaccine.The main reasons for unwillingness to inoculate pneumonia vaccine were considering there was no need to vaccinate (49.57%) and there was not much effect (15.38%) in prevention.
    ConclusionIt is now imperative to increase publicity efforts, popularize vaccine-related knowledge, improve population awareness rate and eliminate misunderstanding in this regard.
