Overweight /obesity and diet as impact factors among residents aged 18 and over in Shanghai

  • ObjectiveTo study the status of overweight /obesity among adults aged 18 and over in Shanghai and analyze the influence factors based on diet.
    MethodsData from the 2013 Shanghai Non-communicable and Chronic Disease Surveillance was used for analyzing the situation of overweight/obesity and its influencing factors in a total of 20 974 residents over the age of 18.Standardized rate was calculated by sixth census data.
    ResultsWithin the surveyed crowd, the prevalence rates of overweight and obesity of the participants were 31.8% and 9.78%.The male overweight rate was 37.60% and the male obesity rate 10.40 %.The female overweight and obesity rates were 26.16%, and 9.26% respectively.Multi-logistic regression showed that higher age, low level of education, drinking, excessive intake of cereal/potato and oil in the diet were risk factors for overweight and obesity, while female, high level of education, rejecting secondhand smoke, light manual work were protective factors for overweight and obesity.
    ConclusionPrevalence of overweight and obesity problems proves to be affected by a variety of factors among residents in Shanghai.Comprehensive measures should be taken to deal with overweight and obesity.
