HIV/AIDS epidemic characteristics analysis in population aged 50 and over in Xindu District, Chengdu City, 2008-2017

  • ObjectiveTo analyze the epidemic trends and characteristics of HIV/AIDS among people aged ≥ 50 years from 2008 to 2017 in Xindu District of Chengdu City, so as to provide a basis for targeted AIDS prevention and control measures.
    MethodsHistorical data on HIV/AIDS aged ≥ 50 years in Xindu District from 2008 to 2017 were collected from China Integrated Prevention and Control Information System of AIDS.Description and statistical analysis of demographic features, distribution over time, route of infection and mortality of HIV/AIDS were performed.
    ResultsA total of 431 cases of HIV/AIDS were reported in Xindu District from 2008 to 2017, of which 115 cases were reported dead.The rising trend of AIDS epidemic was observed in this population.Most of HIV/AIDS cases were aged from 50 to 69 years, accounting for 81.67% of the total.The male HIV/AIDS cases occupied a larger part, and the sex ratio of male to female was 2.75 to 1.The married with a spouse were 50.12% of all HIV-positive cases.Farmers were 58.24%, and those with education below junior middle school 93.50%.The majority of the above cases were infected through sexual transmission, of which heterosexual transmission accounted for 93.74%.Medical institutions were the main sources of HIV-positive samples, holding 80.28%.
    ConclusionThe epidemic of AIDS in population aged ≥ 50 years in Xindu District has increased significantly.To prevent the further spread of AIDS, comprehensive intervention, such as propaganda, education and behavioral intervention, should be strengthened among this population, especially the male population aged 50-69.
