Prevalence and risk factors of varicose veins in adult lower limbs in Jinze Township of Shanghai

ObjectiveTo investigate the morbidity and risk factors of varicose veins (VVs) in adult lower limbs in Jinze Township of Shanghai.

MethodsMultistage random sampling method was employed to include 2 100 local residents aged over 18 years from Jinze Township, who were investigated by questionnaires and physical examination in relation fo prevalence and risk factors of varicose veins in adult lower limbs in Qingpu District of Shanghai.

ResultsA total of 2 048 valid questionnaires were collected from 1 069 females and 979 males.The prevalence rate of VVs was 10.5% (216/2 048), 11.0%(108/979)in males and 10.1%(108/1 069) in females.It was found that age, average standing time per day, hyperlipidemia and family history of VVs were risk factors in the prevalence of VVs based on the results of multiple logistic regression analysis.

ConclusionThe prevalence of VVs in adult lower limbs in Jinze Township of Qingpu District of Shanghai is at a high level.The investigation indicates that great importance should be attached to those with family history of VVs, hyperlipidemia or working with strenuous manual labor.
