Science education effect on patient′s compliance and complication after cardiac electronic device implantation

  • ObjectiveTo investigate application and effect evaluation of popular science education in cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) therapy.
MethodsFrom Jan 2018 to Feb 2019, patients with indication for CIED implantation and those implanted with appropriate device were included and devided into control group (639 cases) and intervention group(653 cases).Patients of the control group received conventional health education and doctor-patient communication; while patients in the intervention group were instructed by means of popular pamphlets, micro-videos, and WeChat public account. Then, medical compliance and post-operative complications were compared between these two groups.
ResultsBoth the implantation (89.4% vs.81.3%, P < 0.01) and follow-up (92.4% vs.87.6%, P < 0.01) compliances were significantly higher in the intervention group than those of the control group.A significantly lower incidence of lead dislodgement (0.7% vs.2.1%, P < 0.05) and pocket hematoma (1.4% vs.3.4%, P < 0.05) were observed in the intervention group compared with the control group.Besides, the intervention group also showed an obviously lower readmission rate for ICD and CRT recipients within 6-month follow-up (7.4% vs.16.7%, P < 0.05).
ConclusionIt is concluded that health education and information dissemination for patients help to enhance their medical compliance of CIED therapy, reduce post-operative complications and readmission rate, which has great medical and social value.
