Shanghai first in China realizes rural tap water and popularizes sanitary toilets for farmers

Drinking water and manure management in rural areas have been with serious health problems left over from history, which are important risk factors for spreading disease endangering farmers′ health.This paper reviews and summarizes the post-liberation work of rural health and disease prevention accomplished by the Shanghai CPC Committee and the municipal government, in accordance with the unified deployment of the State Council.As important work to do for the people so were started rural water improvement(retrofitting unsafe drinking water method and providing farmers with safe and hygienic drinking water) and toilet improvement (changing old customs of farmers in toilet use and popularizing sanitary toilets consistent with innocuous treatment of faeces).By strengthening leadership, strengthening propaganda, relying on science and relying on the masses, for decades of hard work in the whole country in 1994 and 2002, the tasks were first accomplished of improving rural drinking water and toilet in Shanghai.In the countryside of Shanghai, there are 5.56 million farmers, of whom 98.7% drink safe and sanitary tap water; Of 1.33 million households, 92.7% have built innocuous sanitary toilets.So basically were achieved realization of the city′s rural tap water and popularization of household sanitary toilets.This is the great progress of the rural social development in Shanghai.This work for the benefit of the people embodies the CPC′s purpose of serving the people wholeheartedly.
