Causes of death among hypertension patients in Pudong New Area of Shanghai

  • Objective To analyze the main causes of death among hypertension patients in Pudong New Area of Shanghai, and provide evidence for hypertension prevention and control.Methods Permanent residents with hypertension were recruited. Causes of death were classified according to the international classification of diseases, 10th version (ICD-10). Data were sorted and analyzed with the application of STATA 11.0.Results There were 6 853 residents with hypertension died in Pudong New Area in 2014, accounting for 31.72% of total deaths. Cerebrovascular diseases were the major causes of hypertension related mortality with the rate of 765.1 per million, and the rate increased with ageing rapidly. Compared with non-hypertension patients, hypertension patients died of cardiovascular diseases were more often at home or on the way to hospital.Conclusion Cerebrovascular diseases are the major causes of hypertension related mortality. Enhancing patients' self-management can contribute to better control of blood pressure and reduction of cardiovascular events.
