Survey on smoking and drinking among residents in Wenzhou

  • Objective To investigate the status of smoking and drinking among residents in Wenzhou, and to provide evidence for adopting intervention measures. Methods A total of 747 residents aged 15-69 were surveyed by questionnaire who were included through multistage random sampling in 3 representative counties of Wenzhou. Results The smoking rate was 22.0% in Wenzhou (49.5% for male), and the rate of passive smoking was 42.2%.Among the male smokers,76.5% beginning smoking under 24 years old, the average number of cigarettes smoked was 16.6 per day.Drinking rate was 32.4% (55.9% for male, 13.9% for female). Multi-factor analysis showed that influence factors for smoking included sex, occupation and drinking, and for drinking were sex and smoking. Conclusion The prevalence of smoking and drinking in Wenzhou was high. The task of controlling smoking and drinking was arduous.
