Entrovirus infection status in children with acute respiratory infection in Songjiang District of Shanghai

  • ObjectiveTo ascertain the infection status of entrovirus(EV) in children with influenza-like-illness in Songjiang District of Shanghai.
MethodsA total of 1 048 nasopharyngeal swab specimens were collected from children with acute respiratory tract infection (ARTI) during Jan 2015-Dec 2015. Samples were detected by Real-time PCR for EV infection status. With EV test positive specimens, entrovirus strains were isolated from general cell culture methods with RD cells.
ResultsOf the 1 048 swab specimens, 228 were detected to be EV positive. The positive detection rate was 21.76%. And 145 cases of EV strains were isolated from these positive samples. The isolation rate was 63.60% (145/228). Eighty three entroviruses were detected during May 2015-June 2015. The detection rate was 7.92%(83/1 048) of the total in whole year. Forty entrovirus strains were chosen with high Ct values to compare by sequence. The result showed that 27 strains were CoxB3, 7 strains CoxA4, 3 strains CoxA6, and 3 strains CoxA10. In patients aged 6 months-6 years, viral detection rates were higher than those in other groups.
ConclusionType-B EV is the major entrovirus in children with acute respiratory infection in Songjiang District of Shanghai in 2015, whose detection rate was 21.76% in whole year. Therefore, it is important to develop and apply molecular typing method to monitor the entrovirus in children with acute respiratory infection, which offers the information of laboratory for disease prevention and diagnosis and also the laboratory reason why there is the outbreak or epedamic of the disease.
