Healthy City is a global health strategy that was advocated by World Health Organization back in 1980s, and has been implemented in China for over two decades now. Shanghai was the first mega city in the country that started to carry out the Healthy City Initiative and develop pilot projects accordingly. This article reviews 5 rounds of "Healthy City Initiative of Shanghai" which lasted 15 years, and discusses the understanding of that drawn from the experiences in planning the action goals, missions and interventions of the Healthy City Initiative. It also gives recommendations and suggestions for future development of Healthy City.
