Status and related factors analysis on HIV and syphilis infection among MSM in colleges in Yangpu District, Shanghai

  • ObjectiveTo investigate the high-risk behavior characteristics and infection status of HIV and syphilis among men who have sex with men (MSM) in colleges in Yangpu District, Shanghai. To provide basic information for the prevention and control of AIDS among MSM population in colleges, and offer reference for the prevention and control strategy of this population or the educational propaganda model of sexual education in colleges.
    MethodsQuestionnaire surveys were conducted among MSM recruited in college by snowball method from January 2014 to December 2015;HIV and syphilis serology detections were carried out at the same time.
    ResultsOf the 146 MSM respondents aged from 17 to 33 years old, the average age was 23.5±3.0. Undergraduate students accounted for majority, 52%; 138 respondents had homosexual anal sex in the last 6 months, including 50.7% unprotected sexual behavior. 140 respondents had homosexual oral sex in the last six months, including 85.6% unprotected sexual behavior. There were significant differences between education level and unprotected sexual behavior (χanal sex2=12.5, P=0.006). And 28 persons had heterosexual behaviors, among which condom use rate was 35.7%. No significant difference was found between having a girl friend and unprotected homosexual anal sex (χ2=0.337, P=0.562). The HIV infection and syphilis infection rate were 4.1% and 2.7% respectively. Two were co-infected among them.
    ConclusionsIn view of the high incidence of unprotected behavior in MSM population in Yangpu District, the departments concerned should strengthen health education and behavioral intervention.
