Prevalence, subtype distribution of human papillomavirus infection, and vaccination willingness among women in Wuyuan County

  • ObjectiveTo analyze the prevalence, subtype distribution of human papillomavirus infection and HPV vaccination willingness among women in Wuyuan County and to provide suggestions for HPV screening and vaccination strategy.
MethodsThree villages were selected from each of randomly selected 10 towns, and a total of 8936 women aged 20-60 from the 30 selected villages were recruited as study subjects.Questionnaires were applied to collect demographic information and HPV vaccine knowledge. Cervical cells were obtained from each participants using a cyto-brush and PCR were applied to detect HPV DNA and identify HPV genotype.
ResultsThe average age of 8936 participants was 38.15 with a standard deviation of 8.43 years old.The prevalence of HPV was 19.01%, and the single HPV subtype positive rate 12.58%;the low risk subtypes of HPV were mainly HPV6 and HPV11, and the high risk subtypes mainly HPV16, HPV58, HPV52 and HPV18.The multiple HPV subtype positive rate was 6.45%;high risk HPV subtype had obvious age distribution which had a high proportion in women aged 20 to 29 and aged 50 to 60. Only 35.98% of participants heard of HPV vaccination and 61.22% had the willingness to accept the vaccination. The main reasons for unwillingness included lack of knowledge on HPV vaccine safety, high price, unsuitable age for vaccination and worry for the side effects.
ConclusionsThe prevalence of HPV in Wuyuan County is relatively lower, and the distribution of high risk HPV subtype is consistent with national investigation, so HPV58 and HPV52 should be included during HPV screening in Wuyuan County, and the related publicty about HPV vaccination should be strengthened.
