Detection effects compared between three types of selective media for Staphylococcus aureus

  • ObjectiveTo compare the detection effects between three kinds of selective media for Staphylococcus aureus.
MethodsBaird-Parker (BP) agar, Rabbit Plasma Fibrinogen (RPF) agar and CHROMagarTMStaph aureus were selected to test the standard strains, food-isolated strains as well as food samples.
ResultsMore than 95% recovery efficiency could be reached by utilization of all the three types of media. However, the detection effects of RPF and CHROMagarTMStaph aureus were significantly higher than that of BP agar. Moreover, their sensitivity and specificity were also superior to that of conditional BP agar.
ConclusionBetter detection effect is obtained from RPF and CHROMagarTMStaph aureus when compared to that from BP agar, suggesting that RPF and CHROMagarTMStaph aureus agar are more reliable for the detection of Staphylococcus aureus in food.
