Suicidal ideation and its associated factors among three senior high school students in Changning District, Shanghai

  • ObjectiveTo investigate the occurrence, prevalence and influencing factors of suicide ideation in senior high school students.
MethodsSelf-compiled questionnaires were conducted among the senior high school students in Changning District, Shanghai.
ResultsIt was found that 33.75% of high school students had different degrees of suicide ideation. And 42.82% of the students thought that suicide was a crazy behavior.66.39% students thought that suicide was irresponsible to the family and society, 26.32% students were unwilling to contact those who had committed suicide in normal circumstances.Furthermore, the suicide attitude among students of different gender had statistically significant differences (χ2= 38.33, 9.19 and 9.84, P < 0.05).Multivariate logistics regression analysis revealed that female students were more likely to have suicidal ideation (OR=1.371) than male students.Students attending high schools were more likely to have suicidal ideation than those attending vocational senior high schools (OR=1.515).Students with depressive tendencies were more likely to have suicidal ideation (OR=9.195).Students who experienced stressful life events in interpersonal relationships, family and health were more likely to have suicidal ideation, and OR values were 2.651, 1.372 and 1.643, respectively.
ConclusionA small proportion of senior high school students in Changning District have had suicidal ideation. With female students of general high schools, their depression tendency, experiences in their interpersonal relationships, or with their family and health situations all might be risk factors of suicidal ideation. In our future work, we should pay more attention to the psychological situation of girls, finding their tendency to depression as early as possible, reducing the occurrence of negative life events, the occurrence of suicidal behavior.
