Nutrition knowledge, attitude and practice of pupils from four elementary schools of migrant workers in Pudong New Area of Shanghai

  • ObjectiveTo survey the nutrition knowledge, attitude and practice of pupils of migrant workers in elementary schools in Pudong New Area of Shanghai, providing the basis for nutritional education and nutrition improvement for pupils.
    MethodsSurvey was done on the nutrition knowledge, attitude and practice of 720 pupils in grades 3-4 selected from 4 migrant workers' elementary schools in Pudong New Area.
    ResultsFor the nutrition knowledge questions, the percentage of pupils who answered correctly were below 50%.With ten questions as carbohydrates were the base of energy source and so on, those who could answer correctly were below 10%.There were 72% pupils who were eager to know about nutrition knowledge.Pupils eating breakfast everyday accounted for 49.72%, and 2.92% of their breakfast were nutritionally sufficient.The rate of frequent consumption of fruits, eating snacks in terms of nutrition, intake of snacks more than three times per day, exercising regularly and frequent intake of Western style fast food were 49.72%, 7.50%, 20.14%, 46.11% and 13.47%.
    ConclusionThe nutrition practice of pupils of migrant workers needs to improve dramatically.Promotion based on the school should be carried out to improve their nutrition knowledge, their nutrition attitude, and promote their nutrition practice.
