Incidence and mortality of nasopharyngeal carcinoma among residents in former Luwan District of Shanghai, 2004-2011

  • ObjectiveTo analyze the incidence and mortality of nasopharyngeal carcinoma among residents in former Luwan District of Shanghai.
    MethodsThe data on nasopharyngeal carcinoma in permanent residents of former Luwan District were extracted from the cancer registration and management system in Shanghai from 2004 to 2011.Both the incidence and mortality of nasopharyngeal carcinoma were standardized by the demographic composition developed in the Fifth Nationwide Census in the year 2000 and the temporal trend in the incidence and mortality of nasopharyngeal carcinoma was tested and analyzed.
    ResultsA total of 92 nasopharyngeal carcinoma cases were reported from 2004 to 2011, accounting for 0.88% of the total malignant cases.A total of 51 cases died because of nasopharyngeal carcinoma during the same period.Both the incidence and mortality rates in males were higher than that in females.There was an increasing trend of male incidence; while the mortality rate was relatively stable from 2004 to 2011.Both the incidence and mortality of nasopharyngeal carcinoma increased with age after middle age.
    ConclusionThe incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma showed an increasing trend among male residents in former Luwan District during 2004-2011, which calls for attention.
