Cost-benefit analysis of colorectal cancer screening in Xuhui District, Shanghai

  • ObjectiveThe colorectal cancer screening was investigated by the analysis of cost-benefit in the light of health economics, so as to obtain a scientific basis for development and promotion of colorectal cancer screening.
    MethodsThis study was based on the data from colorectal cancer screening in Xuhui District in Shanghai from 2011 to 2016, through estimation of cost, benefit, cost effectiveness, net benefit, cost-effectiveness ratio and analysis of the cost-effectiveness of colorectal cancer screening by the method of benefit ratio.
    ResultsThe average cost of 1 case in the first round of the colorectal cancer screening was 18.20 yuan in Xuhui District.The average cost for finding a case of high risk case was 111.82 yuan, for finding a case of adenomatous lesions 9 755.94 yuan, and for finding a case of colorectal cancer 59 866.02 yuan.The colorectal cancer screening benefit cost was 8 568 100 yuan, the benefit cost ratio was 2.63.
    ConclusionThe economic benefit of the colorectal cancer screening is much more than the cost, so carrying out the screening for high-risk groups and high-risk areas of colorectal cancer is beneficial.
