A cross-sectional study on cognitive function of the elderly in a community of Jing′an District, Shanghai

  • ObjectiveTo investigate the cognitive function of the elderly in a community of Shanghai, and to analyze the influencing factors of cognitive function, so as to provide references for cognitive function intervention of the elderly.
    MethodsQuestionnaires and investigation were used to collect demographic data and cognitive function data on a group of 7 608 elderly people over the age of 60 in 16 residents′ units in Jiangning of Jing′an District of Shanghai, and to analyze the influencing factors of cognitive function in the elderly.
    ResultsThe average age of the 7 608 elderly people was 70.12±8.56(60~99) years.The average score of AD8 scale for the elderly in the community was 0.79±1.71, and the average score of MoCA scale was 25.29±5.16.The average score of MMSE scale was 26.79±4.20, and the detection rate of mild cognitive function impairment was 16.7%, 39.6% and 32.1% respectively.Female, older age and low education level were risk factors for cognitive dysfunction (P < 0.01).Three assessment scales AD8, MoCA and MMSE had significant correlation each other (P < 0.01).
    ConclusionThe detection rate of cognitive impairment is high for elderly in Jiangning of Jing′an District, Shanghai.senile dementia would be a great threat to the elderly.We should take corresponding measures to deal with the aging crisis brought by senile dementia.
