Renal cysts and its influence factor among permanent residents in Sheshan Town, Songjiang District, Shanghai

  • Objective To investigate the prevalence and related risk factors of renal cysts in the resident population of Sheshan Town, Songjiang District, Shanghai, and to provide reference for the prevention of chronic kidney disease.
    Methods Participants were recruited from permanent residents of Sheshan Town, Songjiang District, Shanghai via randomized cluster sampling method, and the questionnaire and physical examination were conducted to collect the data on the prevalence of renal cysts.
    Results Initially, a total of 6 867 residents were recruited in Songjiang District of Shanghai, 5 668 (82.5%)were eligible for the present study.Among the participants, the prevalence of renal cysts was 7.7% and the standardized prevalence was 5.2%.Multivariate analysis showed that gender (OR=1.38, 95%CI:1.07-1.77), age (OR=1.55, 95%CI:1.38-1.74) and quantity of drinking water (OR=2.80, 95%CI:1.47-4.98) were independent risk factors for renal cysts, while BMI≥28 (OR=0.67, 95%CI:0.48-0.92) was a protective factor for renal cysts.
    ConclusionShanghai permanent residents have the risk of renal cysts, specific intervention strategies focusing on the potential risk factors should be carried out among the target population.
