ObjectiveTo investigate the prevalence of major chronic diseases among residents of diabetic patients, and to explore risk factors for co-morbidity of diabetes and fatty liver disease(FLD) in Maogang, Songjiang District in Shanghai.
Methods Cluster sampling was used in Maogang to recruit residents aged 20-74 years old from July to December, 2016.Questionnaire was used in face to face interviews to collect data on personal history of disease diagnosis.Socio-demographic characteristics, dietary, behavioral and life-style factors were also collected.Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS 19.0.
Results A total of 6 165 participants were interviewed.Fifty-seven percent of the participants was female, and 89% was aged over 45 years old.Among all participants, the prevalence of high blood pressure ranked first (34.4%), followed by FLD (29.2%), and the prevalence of diabetes was 9.7%.Among 597 diabetic patients, the prevalence of FLD was 44.9%.Multiple logistic regression showed that co-morbidity of diabetes and FLD was significantly associated with increased age, increased BMI, central obesity (OR=2.13, 95%CI:1.46-3.08) and having family history of diabetes (OR=4.01, 95%CI:3.04-5.30).
Conclusion The co-morbidity of diabetes and fatty liver disease is associated with increased age, increased BMI, central obesity and family history of diabetes.
