Epidemiological characteristics of accident injury among students in primary and middle schools in Yangpu District of Shanghai from 2014 to 2016

  • ObjectiveTo investigate the current situation of injury occurring in Yangpu District and provide the basis for prevention and control and intervention measures.
    MethodsThe students′ injury cases were analyzed in whole Yangpu District from 2014 to 2016.
    ResultsFrom 2014 to 2016, the incidence of injury in primary and secondary schools in Yangpu District was 4.08‰, and the incidence of injuries with male and female was 5.47‰ and 2.60‰ respectively.The incidence of injuries among primary and middle school students was 3.11‰ and 5.15‰ respectively.The differences in incidence between male and female students were statistically significant and also between middle and primary school students.73% of injury occurred mainly in schools.The injuries occurred mainly at 10am and 2pm to 3pm.The highest cause of injury was dropping/falling, accounting for 66.7%.As to the nature of injuries, fracture accounted for 62.4%;and among the sites of injuries, the proportions of wrist or hand (26.4%) and ankle or foot (26.4%) were the highest.
    ConclusionIn combination with the characteristics of the students who have been injured, targeted prevention and intervention should be carried out for students of different types of schools so as to reduce the incidence of injuries more effectively.
