Temephos intervention in breeding of Aedes albopictus in grate type water wells

  • ObjectiveTo investigate the control of Aedes albopictus in residential areas by dosing 1% temephos into grate type water wells, then providing an effective basis for the prevention and control of Dengue in residents district.
MethodsIn July-September of 2017, grate type water wells built before 2000 were selected as research sites and divided into experimental and control groups in two residential areas of Qibao Town of Minhang District of Shanghai. And then 1% temophos granule(Abate®) were put into the water wells of the experimental group, while the wells of the control group were put nothing. Then we investigated the indexes as positive rate of mosquito larvae OI, density of adult mosquito PMI by CO2 mosquito trap, and mosq-ovitrap index (MOI) utilizing Mosq-ovitrap.
ResultsA total of 696 grate type water wells were investigated, of which 327 had water. The positive rates of larvae survival between experimental group 13.04% (21/161)and control group 40.96% (68/166) of grate type water wells were statistically significant (P < 0.01).The positive rates of the average of adult As. albopictus between experimental group(1.778±1.093)and control group(36.889±18.052)were statistically significant(P < 0.01).The control group was 20.57 times the density of the experimental group. Each group was placed with 150 Mosq-ovitraps, while 273 of them were collected. The MOI, PMI and OI in the experimental group were 25.90, 22.30% and 7.91%.The MOI, PMI and OI in the control group were 51.49, 48.51% and 17.16%.
ConclusionThe intervention measure of dosing 1% temephos into grate type water wells in the residential district before the peak of mosquitoes density proves to be obviously effective on the prevention and control of Dengue fever.
