Prevalent situation in traffic injury among students during 2012-2016 in Jiading District, Shanghai

  • ObjectiveTo investigate the prevalent status of students traffic injury in Jiading District and to provide the basis for effective prevention and control of student traffic injury.
    MethodsOn the basis of School Injury Surveillance System of Shanghai traffic injury cases of students from primary and middle schools in 2012-2016 were analyzed.
    ResultsA total of 101 cases of student traffic injuries in primary and middle schools were reported in Jiading District between 2012-2016.The report rate of traffic injury in the 5 years was 0.34 ‰, of which the male was 0.46 ‰, much higher than that of the female (0.20 ‰)(P < 0.01);and the rate of traffic injury in middle school students was 0.40‰, and in primary schools students 0.29 ‰.The top three natures of injuries were fractures (53.47 %), bruises/contusions (14.85%), combined injuries (10.89%); and the three top parts of injury occurred on ankle and foot (19.80%), hip/lower limbs (18.81%) and shoulder/upper limbs (16.83%).The time of occurrence of traffic injuries were on the way to school (46.53%), holidays (35.64%) and after school (15.84%).
    ConclusionMale students are the main group in traffic injury.Schools and communities need to carry out targeted safety education and behavior intervention to prevent traffic injuries.
