Status quo investigation on disinfection-related basic information of 452 nursing institutions in Shanghai, 2018

  • ObjectiveTo investigate disinfection-related regulations, staffing and other related information of nursing institutions in Shanghai, in order to provide evidence for formulating relevant policies.
    MethodsQuestionnaire based investigation was conducted to collect disinfection-related basic information of nursing facilities in Shanghai and descriptive analysis was performed.
    ResultsA total of 452 nursing institutions were investigated, of which 6.4%(29/452) had no disinfection and isolation regulations, 15.7%(71/452) had no infectious disease reporting regulations; 52.9% (239/452) had more than 100 elderly people; on average, every 100 elderly people were cared for by 2.6 physicians (median 1.5), 21.8 nurses (median 19.5) and 2.9 full-time cleaning staff (median 1.4);in summer and winter, 98.2%(443/451) and 93.7%(423/451)of the institutions opened windows for ventilation ≥2 times per day; however, in winter, 10.0%(45/450) of the institutions opened windows less than 30 minutes per time; the predominant ways of hand hygiene were "running water + soap"(55.3%)and "running water + hand sanitizer" (37.2%), predominant ways of hand drying were personal towel(59.7%) and napkins(32.1%), but still 3.1% of the institutions had phenomenon of towel sharing among the elderly.
    ConclusionOn the whole, nursing facilities in Shanghai have accepted relatively too many elderly, but are short of sufficient cleaning staff.Part of the institutions have problems of lacking in disinfection-related regulations, insufficient time for ventilation by window opening.There are risks of infectious disease epidemic existent to some extent.
