Investigation of a cluster outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 in Shaanxi Province

  • ObjectiveTo investigate and analyze the transmission characteristics of a cluster outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in a funeral in W city, Shaanxi province, in order to inform prevention and intervention strategies for COVID-19.
MethodsWe carried out epidemiological investigation on confirmed cases and their close contacts, analyzed the transmission chain, and then collected nasopharyngeal swabs of the cases and related persons for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) nucleic acid testing.
ResultsA total of 5 mild and 1 severe confirmed cases, and 1 asymptomatic case were identified, with the attack rate of 5.88% (6/102).The first case, case A, had the onset on January 25, 2020, and other cases occurred 3 to 13 days later.case B, C, D and case E, F were determined to be second and third generation cases, respectively. The outbreak occurred through close contact in the funeral. The average incubation period was estimated to be 11.5 days.
ConclusionSARS-CoV-2 has been identified to be highly transmissible. It is necessary to recognize the source of infection as early as possible, to prepare personal protection, and to avoid mass gathering so as to control potential cluster outbreaks.
