Abstract
Objective To obtain the epidemiologic characteristics of Salmonella infection in Huangpu District, Shanghai. Methods Three hospitals were selected randomly for monitoring. Basic information of each case was recorded. According to the definition of Salmonella infection, clinical symptoms and epidemiologic data from patients were collected. The stool samples were taken for serotype detection. Results Salmonella detection rate was decreasing from 2008 to 2011. The average detection rate was 3.25% in Huangpu District, which was slightly higher than the average level of Shanghai(3.13%). Most cases occurred between May and October. The incidence rate in male was 1.53 times higher than that in female. People between 20 and 39 were more likely to get infected. Salmonella Enteritis(31.83%) and Salmonella Typhimurium(15.57%) were the dominant serotypes. Conclusion The Salmonella detection rate of diarrhea patients presented a decreasing trend in Huangpu District within the past 4 years while the average detection rate in Huangpu District was higher than that in Shanghai. In order to effectively control Salmonella infection and raise the public awareness of Salmonella prevention, case surveillance and management, food safety management, and health education should be placed in high priority.
