Relationship between body mass index and metabolic abnormalities among elderly people in a community of Shanghai

  • Objective To ascertain and so make better intervention in body mass index (BMI) distribution and hypertension,hyperglycemia,dyslipidemia,hyperuricemia,metabolic syndrome,the prevalence of such relationships among elderly people of Hunan community of Shanghai.Methods By the medical analysis of over the age of 60, investigation was done through history taking, physical examination, laboratory tests, measurement of height, weight, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, blood lipids, blood uric acid etc.Results The average BMI was 24.15±3.38,average BMI for male being 24.11±3.15,average BMI for female being 24.18±3.53,and mean BMI showed no difference between men and women. Proportion of overweight and obesity was 51.64%,higher than that in the normal group.Male 60-69 years old group had the highest proportion of obesity. Over the age of 60 detection rate of hypertension in overweight and obese people was up to 83.40% and 87.01%, significantly higher than those in the normal group. Detection rate of dyslipidemia in overweight and obese population was up to 67.98% and 75.33%,higher than those in the low weight group and normal group.In normal weight women with dyslipidemia,66.86% detection rate was higher than that in the same group of men 50.42%.In metabolic syndrome in overweight and obesity,the detection rate was 35.97% and 61.04% respectively, significantly higher than those in the low weight group and normal group. Hyperuricemia in obese group reached 36.36%, higher than those in the other three groups. Detection rate of high blood sugar in overweight and obesity was higher than that in the other groups.Conclusion We should strengthen health education,control weight and other cardiovascular diseases risk factors,so as to improve the quality of life in elderly people.
