Trend analysis on gastric cancer incidence in Songjiang District of Shanghai from 1988 to 2012

Objective To analyze the long term trend of gastric cancer incidence in Songjiang District of Shanghai from 1988 to 2012, and to provide the basis for the prevention and control of gastric cancer.Methods Incidence data of gastric cancer in Songjiang (1988-2012) were collected for description of the sex and age of patients. By means of annual percent change(APC) model, the temporal trend was analyzed in relation to the gastric cancer incidence.Results The incidence of gastric cancer increased with age, and entered into the stage of accelerated growth in males and females over age of 50. The incidence was obviously higher in males than in females.It was demonstrated that the overall standardized incidence rate showed a downtrend during 1988-2012; the annual decline rate was 3.44% and decline mainly occurred in 1988-2000. The incidence fell a bit faster in males than in females and continued to fall in the group aged 45-64. The fall in the group aged 65-74 obviously occurred in 1998-2000.Conclusion Gastric cancer incidence in Songjiang District has fallen year by year, but risen with age. The research for environmental risk factors should be strengthened, and prevention and treatment should be carried out according to the practical situation.
