Study of mosquito species, density and seasonal changes in Huangpu District of Shanghai from 2008 to 2015

  • Objective To determine mosquito species, density and seasonal changes in Huangpu District, Shanghai; and to provide scientific evidences for control strategies. Methods In total five representative indoor spots were selected. Mosquito monitoring was carried out using the labor hour method from March to November each year. Mosquitos were monitored by electric mosquito absorption three times each month, which was in early, middle and late of the months, and last for 15 minutes each time. Results In total there were 677 mosquito adults were captured from 2008 to 2015, with an average mosquito density of 2.6/(pcs/h·site). Main mosquito species were Culex pipiens pallens and Aedes albopictus. The mosquito density increased first, peaked in 2012-2014 and declined afterward in the study period from 2008 to 2015. The density was the highest in residential areas, followed by parks, government buildings, and school dormitories. The monthly distribution of mosquito density in 2008-2014 showed two peaks, which were in June to July and September to October, respectively. Conclusion The major mosquito species are Culex pipiens pallens and Aedes albopictus in Huangpu district. June to July and September to October are the two peak periods. Strengthened control measures are advised before the peak periods. Long-term monitoring, early warning and control measures of mosquito transmission need to be strengthened.
