Cost-effectiveness analysis on directly observed treatment strategy for tuberculosis prevention and cure in Gongshu District of Hangzhou City, 2002-2012

Objective To make cost-effectiveness analysis on the eleven years of implementation of DOTS for tuberculosis prevention and cure in Gongshu District of Hangzhou City.Methods According to the End Stage Assessment Plan for National Tuberculosis Control Project(2001-2010), the tuberculosis(TB) control program of Gongshu District from 2002 to 2012 in relation to funding, detection and treatment of TB patients, as well as social and economic benefits resulting from that were analyzed.Results Through the implementation of DOTS in Gongshu District, 3 467 patients were found with active tuberculosis, 10 963 kept away from being infected and 1 096 from becoming new patients, thus reducing medical costs 746 652 yuan and retrieving total social value of 896 056 969 yuan. The total social cost was 7 890 700 yuan and the effectiveness-cost-ratio was 113.65.Conclusion The prevention and control of TB in Gongshu District from 2002 to 2012 has achieved good social benefits and economic effectiveness.
