Abstract:
ObjectiveTo analyze the epidemiological characteristics and trends on smoking behavior among community residents aged 20-69 in Huangpu District of Shanghai, and to provide basis for tobacco control measures.
MethodsThe data were obtained from the Shanghai Non-communicable Chronic Disease Surveillance in Huangpu District in 2007, 2010 and 2013. The three surveillances used multi-stage random sampling method.
ResultsRates of smoking, current smoking and passive smoking among community residents aged 20-69 were 28.3%, 24.1% and 41.4% in 2007, 30.2%, 25.1% and 34.7% in 2010, 25.5%, 20.1% and 39.9% in 2013. Among men, the standardized prevalence of tobacco smoking statistically decreased (60.7% in 2007, 54.4% in 2010, and 48.1% in 2013; P < 0.01). Regarding passive smoking, the standardized prevalence was similar among men in the three surveys (34.8% in 2007, 33.0% in 2010, and 42.5% in 2013; P=0.12), whereas it decreased among women (48.4% in 2007, 40.1% in 2010, and 40.3% in 2013; P < 0.01).
ConclusionThe prevalence of tobacco smoking among residents, current smoking among men, and exposure to second-hand smoking remained high.
