Survey on knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) and influencing factors among community patients with type 2 diabetes who use mobile phones

    Abstract:
ObjectiveTo assess the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) situation in community diabetes patients who use mobile phones, and analyze the influencing factors, so as to provide references for targeted control measures in community diabetes patients.
MethodsA total of 129 diabetes patients who used mobile phones were selected as the object of investigation using simple random sampling. Their diabetes mellitus-related knowledge, attitude and behavior were investigated by certified self-designed KAP Questionnaire for Community Diabetics, and the possible factors influencing diabetes knowledge scores were analyzed using the univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis.
ResultsA total of 129 questionnaires were issued and 121 were returned, with a recovery rate of 93.80%. The mean of diabetes knowledge scores was (46.37±16.11). The subjects who considered that diet, health education, regular exercise and healthy psychology contributed to the control of diabetes mellitus, accounting for 97.5%, 95.9%, 93.4% and 86.8% of the subjects, respectively. 79.3% of the patients maintained their diet and exercise, and 48.8% received health education sessions. Those with low detection rates of 2 hour postprandial blood sugar and glycosylated hemoglobin, accounting for 29.8% and 38.8% respectively. Only 3.3% of the subjects had their feet examined regularly. Higher family income was related with higher diabetes knowledge score (OR=2.255, P=0.017), and subjects who used mobile phone to read WeChat's scored higher than those who did not use WeChat (OR=3.310, P=0.005).
ConclusionThe level of diabetes knowledge scores was low in the studied diabetes patients. The majority of diabetes patients had a positive attitude towards comprehensive control of diabetes mellitus, but the implementation rate of control measures was low, especially the regular medical examination was not paid enough attention. Higher family income and using mobile phone to read WeChat's were related to the higher score of diabetes knowledge. We should make the best of WeChat function and increase health education publicity in diabete patients so as to improve their knowledge, attitude and practice level.
